SUMMARY:Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:How Introduced Plants\, Worms\, and Deer are Reshaping Our Neighborhoods\n\nAll habitats of the Northeast and their inhabitants are currently facing an unprecedented challenge by needing to simultaneously respond to global climate change\, invasive species\, habitat fragmentation\, and increasing deer herds. Which species can be assumed safe? Which species will likely go extinct? And what is the role of humans not only as facilitators of global change but also as stewards of our natural heritage? \nDr. Blossey will focus on the interplay of deer\, worms\, and invasive plants and address what individuals and organizations can do to help conservation efforts. Bernd Blossey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University. \nPhoto provided by Christina Rollo\, http://www.rollosphotos.com.

SUMMARY:Field Trip - New Michigan State Forest - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:DUE TO WEATHER – THIS FIELD TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED!\nThis is a unique high elevation forest which features boreal forest-like habitat not seen outside the Adirondacks or summits of the Catskills. It is one of the few places that SWAINSON’S THRUSH (a boreal forest bird) actually nests in Central NY. This place you can get ALL brown thrushes in the east at once… WOOD\, HERMIT AND SWAINSON’S THRUSH plus VEERY. In addition\, the spruces are full of warblers\, Blackburnian and Magnolia are particularly abundant here along with quite a few Mourning and Canada warblers. \nConsider packing a lunch or at least a snack if you need to eat before noon. It is a 1 hour drive\, so we will probably bird from 8 to Noon and then head home. \nMeet at Oakdale Mall\, pole #6 at the back of Sears at 7:00am. All are welcome!\nPlease consider volunteering to drive as we will likely need more than one vehicle.

SUMMARY:Member Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Our Annual Member Picnic will be on Wednesday\, June 26 at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton. Please bring your own table service and a dish to pass. Drinks (soda\, water\, juice) will be provided. If you don’t have a dish to pass\, come anyway\, as there is always plenty of good food. \nProgram: History of Otsiningo Park\nIn 1971\, Dolores Elliott directed salvage archeological excavations at Otsiningo Park during the construction of the Comfort Station. She will talk about the history of the land and will point out where the excavations took place and where the prehistoric houses were located. \nMore than 12\,000 years ago\, the land on what became Otsiningo Park was buried under a mile of ice. As the glacier retreated\, animals such as mastodons\, mammoths\, and other megafauna moved north into our valleys. People we call PaleoIndians followed their prey north. The big animals became extinct\, the climate warmed\, and berry and nut producing plants began to grow here. The cultures of the people changed over the millenia to adapt to the changing environment. Less than 1\,000 years ago a horticulture economy based on many varieties of corn\, beans\, and squash evolved. By 400 years ago people related to the Iroquois were living here. Artifacts documenting life here over the last 12 millenia have been found in Otsiningo Park. \nDirections to Picnic Pavilion: Otsiningo Park is located near the intersection of Upper Front Street and Bevier Street with the entrance off of Bevier Street. After entering the park follow the loop. Shortly after the volleyball pits\, take a right on the driveway to the community gardens follow the driveway to the Pavilion located near the old I-81 rest stop.
