SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Social Influences in Song Birds
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker will be Justin Mann.  Migratory songbirds can collect information about their environment or they can utilize social cues from other individuals to assess the quality of a habitat. To examine how migratory songbirds are influenced by social information\, black-and-white warbler songs were broadcast at study sites where that species had not been observed during baseline bird surveys. Experiments were conducted in both low and high quality habitats. We will discuss how social information influences habitat selection in songbirds and what that could mean for attracting species back to restored habitats. \nJustin Mann grew up in the Endless Mountains region of Pennsylvania. At a young age his parents introduced him to the joys of birdwatching\, a hobby which quickly developed into a passion. Justin is currently a PhD student in the Ecology\, Evolution\, and Behavior program in the Department of Biological Sciences at Binghamton University\, where he is studying the behavioral ecology of birdsong. He lives in Endwell\, New York with his wife and three children.

SUMMARY:Porcupine Hike
DESCRIPTION:BU Nature Preserve Hemlock Grove\nSaturday\, February 25 -1:00pm \nWinter can be a dreary time\, so plan to get out for a field trip! Hemlock groves are still green and are full of animal life. We will hike into the Binghamton  University Nature Preserve to visit several hemlock groves.  During the winter\, these areas provide shelter and a haven from the deeper\nsnows for many mammals  and birds.  Highlights often include deer beds\, Red Squirrels\, Great Horned Owls\, Golden-Crowned Kinglets\, Fisher tracks\, and the main object of our labor:  PORCUPINES.  You will learn how to locate a porky through their sign and hopefully we will actually see one (be prepared to crane your neck\, but it is good warbler training). We will also discuss invasive species affecting hemlocks and the surge in the population of the predatory Fisher. \nThe hemlock groves are on a fairly steep hillside and if the snow is deep it can be a rigorous walk.  However\, the lower hemlock grove is before the steeper portion and is fairly accessible.  If the snow is deep think about snowshoes!  Total walk is probably between 1 and 1.5 miles.  Wear sturdy shoes\, dress warmly and bring your binoculars.  Total trip time between 1 to 2 hours.  Park at the upper end of parking lot M and meet at the entrance to the Nature Preserve.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Mariana Crows
DESCRIPTION:The Mariana Crow is a small\, unique forest crow endemic to the islands of Guam and Rota in the Mariana Islands. This species has experienced a dramatic decline in the past 30-40 years. Andria Kroner will discuss their ecology\, the factors that are contributing to their decline\, and what is currently being done to reverse it. We will discuss Andria’s proposed behavioral research which may play a key role in understanding this intelligent species and improving the success of future reintroductions.\nAndria Kroner graduated with a bachelor’s in Wildlife and Conservation Biology from Murray State University. From there she worked as a field biologist focusing\, initially\, on raptor conservation work in the Southwestern US\, during which she spent two years\non the California Condor recovery program field team in Arizona. Though\, in mid-2012 Andria found herself in the Mariana Islands of the western tropical Pacific radio tracking fledglings of the critically endangered Mariana Crow. She has been involved in the Mariana Crow recovery program ever since. Andria is now in her second year as a PhD student at Binghamton University being advised by Dr. Anne Clark. \nSILENT AUCTION\nThe Naturalists’ Club will be holding their annual Silent Auction at our February membership meeting.\nPlease bring any nature related items you would like to donate to the club for this fundraiser. SUMMARY:Membership Meeting - New York Forests
DESCRIPTION:New York Forests – An Endangered Species?\n                                                          by Jerry Michael\nThe second-growth forests covering nearly two thirds of our state are facing many threats. Expected impacts from the Emerald Ash Borer and Hemlock Woolley Adelgid are well-understood and relatively near-term. The impacts from climate change are less well-understood\,  but long term. However\, the most serious and pervasive threat is the inability of our most desirable native tree species to successfully reproduce themselves. We will discuss the origin of the crisis a half-century ago\, current scientific and regulatory approaches to solutions\, and the consequences of inaction. \nJerry Michael has been a Master Forest Owner Volunteer with Cornell Cooperative Extension for 21 years. He serves on the Board for the New York Forest\nOwners Association and the Waterman Conservation Education Center. He is\nalso a member of the Broome County Environmental Management Council. In\nhis spare time\, he works at establishing a third-growth forest on his Whitney Point\nwoodlot.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - “PHOTOGRAPHING WILD” by Teri Franzen
DESCRIPTION:Teri Franzen is passionate about observing and photographing wildlife on its terms\, wild\, unaltered and undisturbed.  She has been a wildlife photographer since 2012 after having met up with a Northern Goshawk on her very first outing. Since then she’s photographed mammals and birds throughout the US as well as Italy and Africa. Her two most involved ventures have been photographing Wood Ducks in 2015 and Peregrine Falcons in 2016\, both requiring long hours in makeshift blinds.  She will discuss these two project\, as well as other photographic work\, for our November meeting. \nTeri Franzen has been a software engineer since the early 1990s\, developing fly-by-wire flight control systems for fixed and rotary winged aircraft. \nLocation: Vestal Public Library\, Vestal NY

Please bring the prepared hot and cold dishes wrapped to place on the serving tables.  Please remember to bring YOUR OWN TABLE SERVICE\, NAPKINS AND SERVING UTENSILS. \nThe program for the evening is: \nLang Elliott  Recording and Appreciating the Sounds of Nature \nIn this presentation\, Lang will summarize how he records and appreciates the sounds of nature\, contrasting two basically different approaches that complement one another in the grand scheme of things. During the talk\, Lang will demonstrate and discuss the equipment he uses\, with emphasis on the various microphone setups. He will also play a number of field recordings and discuss what excites him about each.\nLang Elliott is a well-known nature recordist who has been active in the field for nearly thirty years. He is the author of numerous guides to the sounds of birds and other wildlife sounds. His recordings are featured on the National Audubon Society website and in numerous birding apps for mobile devices. These days\, Lang is busy preparing to launch a podcast series in which he will share the fruits of his many recording adventures. Lang lives in Ithaca\, New York with his partner Siobhan\, and spends lots of time up to his neck in muck and grime.

Rick will share his amazing photos and keen observations of a local Great Blue Heron rookery that he has been observing for many years now. \nRick is a Professor Emeritus from The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam where he served as Chair of Music Education and conductor of Crane Chorus. He considers himself an observer/reporter of things natural and he loves to take pictures for “show and tell”! \nOur September Meeting will also feature an Open House. \nBarb Cole\, club member and licensed wildlife rehabilitator\, will bring a rescued animal. At the meeting\, we encourage members to show their support for local wildlife rehabilitators by helping to collect donations of rehabilitation supplies.  Suggested donations include: small coffee filters\, baby food\, powdered milk\, old blankets and towels\, dog food\, and paper towels.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting - The Return of the American Chestnut
DESCRIPTION:As a keystone species and mast-producing canopy tree\, the loss of the American chestnut from the Eastern US was an ecological and economic disaster for the region more than a hundred years ago. This native species\, once classified as functionally extinct\, is now poised to make a comeback thanks to modern technology and ground-breaking research.\nThe American Chestnut Research and Restoration Project will share their inspiring success story\, and elaborate on how genetic engineering can benefit the fields of conservation and restoration. \nDr. Allison Oakes is currently a postdoctoral research associate and maintains the production of micropropagated American chestnut shoots of over one hundred transgenic event lines\, eight wild-type lines\, and six hybrid lines. She is currently investigating the effect of different growth regulator concentrations on shoot development\, and is continuing her dissertation research focus on improving rooting and acclimatization of American chestnut shoots. \nDr. Oakes received her doctorate at The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse and continues to work there. \nDon’t forget that our annual May Plant Sale will take place during this meeting! Be sure to stop by so you can pick up some plants for your garden!

DESCRIPTION:The Naturalists’ Club of Broome County will lead three Bird Song Classes in May. Join a club naturalist for a Saturday morning\, and learn to identify birds by their song as well as by sight. Bring your binoculars and dress for the weather\, including possibly muddy conditions. \nClasses start at 8 AM and will last about 3 hours. Attend one\, two or all three sessions. DESCRIPTION:The Northern Saw-whet Owl in Your Back Yard\nThis month’s talk\, “The Northern Saw-whet Owl in Your Back Yard”\, describes John  Confer’s fall banding station at his houseon Hammond Hill for migrating Northern Saw-whet Owls and describes saw-whet migration and population dynamics in eastern\nNorth America. John has banded between 50 and 100 saw-whets in the last four falls. The talk focuses on migratory patterns revealed from the 250\,00 banded saw-whets and the 1\,400 that have been banded and recaptured again in the same fall. Last spring\, John monitored 7 Merlin nests in the Ithaca area and could be persuaded to add a few Merlin observations from the recent paper.

The festival overflows with birds\, entertainment\, education and fun.\nIn this photo filled presentation\, you will learn what makes this festival special and tips for taking advantage of all the resources available to find birds in the area. Information about travel arrangements and planning your visit to Magee Marsh in northwest Ohio will also be covered.\nRenee DePrato is a club member and avid birder who enjoys traveling to see new birds. Specialties include Moose\, Bald Eagles\, Elk\, Waterfowl\, Backyard Birds and Whitetail deer. They endeavor to do the photography in a manner to avoid stressing animals or birds. These award winning photographers will share examples of thier work\, talk about their techniques for photographing wildlife and answer questions.\nJim and Joan Borden are avid outdoor and wildlife photographers. They reside outside of Springville Pennsylvania and spend a great deal of times traveling to photograph birds\, wild animals and scenery. SUMMARY:Membership Meeting “SPHAGNUM MOSS - THE MOST IMPORTANT PLANT IN THE UNIVERSE”
DESCRIPTION:MEMBER PROGRAM\nWEDNESDAY\, SEPTEMBER 23\, 2015\n“SPHAGNUM MOSS – THE MOST IMPORTANT PLANT IN THE UNIVERSE”\nSphagnum mosses are wetland plants consisting of over 200 species found around the world. Their unique ability to hold huge amounts of water as well as biologically make\nthe water in which they grow become more acidic creates wetland environments in which decay rates are very low and large amounts of organic matter accumulate in the\nform of peat. Worldwide this peat has accumulated  in bog up to 20 ft in depth and is responsible for around a quarter of the biologically stored carbon on the planet. Climatic\nwarming could well change this situation and trigger release of stored carbon in peat by increasing decay rates in northern latitudes in Alaska\, Canada and the Russia. \nRichard Andrus\, PhD is well known in the community for producing distinguished naturalists such as  Victor Lamoureux.  After completing his PhD in Forest Botany at SUNY ESF\, he moved to Binghamton in  1973 where he has taught in the Environmental Studies Program at Binghamton University ever since.  His research has been primarily on the classification and  ecology of Sphagnum moss\, which has provided him the opportunity to travel fo research to most of  the cool and wet places in the world. \nOur September Meeting will also feature an Open House. \nWood Carvings by Tim Hill We will have a short presentation by Tim Hill showing and discussing his wood carvings.  You can  check out Tim’s work by visiting his website at http://woodcarvingsbytimhill.weebly.com. \nAnimal Rehabilitation\nBarb Cole\, club member and licensed wildlife rehabilitator\, will bring a rescued animal.  At the  meeting\, we encourage members to show their support for local wildlife rehabilitators by helping to collect  donations of rehabilitation supplies.\nSuggested donations include: small coffee  filters\, baby food\, powdered milk\,\nold blankets and towels\, dog food\, and paper towels.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting – You\, Me\, Birds and Global Warming
DESCRIPTION:In her talk\, Kim relates her love of science\, nature\, and birds to the current climate crisis and its implications for biodiversity.  She shares her personal response to the climate crisis from her perspective as a parent\, a birder\, and a professional ornithologist\, and closes her talk with a serious but empowering message\, outlining a “Simple 5 Point Plan” that bird-lovers can use to organize their own response to climate change. \nOriginally from upstate New York\, Bostwick received her PhD from the University of Kansas in 2002\, and since then has worked as the curator of birds and mammals at Cornell University.  Bostwick’s research has focused on bird behavior and evolution\, allowing her to travel throughout Central and South America\, as well as to South Africa\, and Papua New Guinea.  In 2005 Bostwick was featured in Nature’s Deep Jungles three-part series\, where she danced like a Red-capped Manakin to the tune of Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean”.  This clip of video was extracted and posted to YouTube\, where it went viral and has been viewed millions of times\, spawned many knock-offs\, and brought great fame and many fans to a very deserving\, but otherwise little known bird.  Her research on the Club-winged Manakin was featured in National Geographic in May of 2012.  Recently\, spurred by the birth of her own two children\, Bostwick decided to reorient her career to become more active in science outreach\, specifically as it relates to climate change. She is now using her scientific literacy and communication skills to translate climate science for general audiences\, with the specific goal of motivating behavioral changes through science-based story-telling.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting – Kenyan Safari with Friends
DESCRIPTION:In 2005 Dolores Elliott traveled to Kenya with an Iroquois beadworker to help him revive beadwork among several groups in Kenya. While there she made friends with a Maasai man whose dream it was to start a safari company. In 2014 Dolores invited four friends to join her on safari with David\, whose dream had been realized. David took them to several game reserves\, villages\, museums\, schools\, and to visit his family. Of course\, they saw tens of thousands of wild animals including the “big five” and herds of zebras\, many species of antelopes\, and giraffes. They went to an elephant nursery\, dined with rhinos and crocodiles\, and saw hundreds of species of birds. This personal safari was an adventure of a lifetime. She will share pictures of some of the highlights. Dolores Elliott is a long time Naturalists’ Club member who joined 1967 after she met several Weedwalkers who volunteered at an archaeological excavation that she was directing. She has presented several programs in the past. Currently\, she directs the Iroquois Studies Association.

Learn how you can assist them in all stages of their lifecycle as well as distinguish them from pests\, so that all of us can enjoy these beautiful creatures in the future. \nColleen Wolpert is a butterfly and moth enthusiast and long-time member of the Naturalists’ Club. She started with butterflies at an early age\, received her Master’s in social work\, and then even started her own “butterfly therapy” program to work with children and adults. She used to drive the back roads of Broome with Harriet Marsi and the “Butterfly Bunch”. Now shes work on educating the public about all aspects of the butterfly life cycle. Her enthusiasm is infectious. Come learn about how you can get your yard ready for lepidoptera this spring!

DESCRIPTION:Designed for the novice birdwatcher or someone just beginning\, this course will provide basic tools to begin a life-long enjoyment of birds. The classroom portion will cover basic bird biology\, binoculars\, field guides\, identification tips\, and local families of birds. The course includes two field trips to introduce basic field methods to find\, observe\, and ID birds. \nCourse will be led by Victor S. Lamoureux and other Naturalist Club members. Victor is a local naturalist and wildlife photographer and professor of biology at SUNY-Broome.
