SUMMARY:Member Meeting - An Insider's View of Denali
DESCRIPTION:Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska is a shining star in the National Park system of the United States. Larger than the state of New Hampshire with nearly a third of it designated as “Wilderness”\, this intact ecosystem houses incredible diversity\, landscapes\, and a magic all its own. Framed by the Alaska Range and Mount Denali\, visitors can enjoy charismatic megafauna\, incredible wildflowers\, and unimaginably large vistas. Come enjoy a photographic journey of some of our favorite parts of the Park and learn what makes Denali so special. \nMargeaux Maerz is originally from Vestal\, but has found a way to spend most of her time traveling. After graduating from the University of Georgia with her degree in Ecology\, Margeaux worked as an environmental educator and naturalist guide for various non-for-profits and government organizations along the east coast and abroad. \nSam Wilson has been working in conservation and environmental education for the past 10 years\, including for NJ Audubon as a naturalist at the Nature Center in Cape May\, New Jersey. Sam is also an occasional writer and photographer for magazines like Cape May Magazine\, Audubon\, and American Birding Association’s Birding. Sam was honored this year with a photo in the 2018 Audubon Photography Awards Top 100.  \nMargeaux and Sam met in Cape May\, NJ in 2014 when they both worked as educators for NJ Audubon. Over the past few years together the travel bug bit…hard…and they have since traveled around the southern US\, East Asia\, Southeast Asia\, England\, and Alaska—all in pursuit of birds and wildlife. Margeaux started her career in Alaska in 2016 working for the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies in Homer\, Alaska. Both Margeaux and Sam quickly fell in love with the wilderness of Alaska and took positions as Naturalist Guides for Camp Denali and North Face Lodge in Denali National Park and Preserve. As guides for private lodges housed at the western end of the Park road\, they enjoy uncommon access to Denali and its unadulterated wilderness. It is their time spent exploring Denali that inspired Margeaux and Sam to give this photographic journey of one of the most beautiful places in North America.

SUMMARY:Harvest Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual Harvest Dinner. Our program will be presented by Bill Evans whose topic will be: THE EARLY EFFORTS TO MINIMIZE BIRD MORTALITY AT TALL COMMUNICATIONS TOWERS – STORIES FROM BROOME COUNTY. \nBeginning in the 1950s\, large bird kills were regularly documented at tall TV towers across North America. The United State Fish & Wildlife Service estimated that millions of songbirds were being killed annually. In 1997\, with the threat on the horizon of 1000 new tall TV towers to be built for digital television infrastructure\, an effort arose to mitigate the kills. Bill Evans will present his recollections of those earlier years\, including stories involving Broome County. \nBill Evans is director of Old Bird Inc.\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on nocturnal bird migration research & education. For the past 30 years Bill has studied the vocalizations birds give while in nocturnal migration. His expertise on nocturnal bird migration led him into active involvement with efforts to mitigate avian fatalities at communications towers\, wind turbines\, and oil & gas drilling rigs. His current research is directed toward developing a new index for songbird populations and understanding the impacts of artificial light on night-migrating birds. Bill’s research has been featured on PBS\, BBC\, NPR and in Science\, The New York Times and numerous science-news periodicals. Bill lives with his wife and two children in the Town of Danby\, NY. \nPotluck Dinner\nYour food contributions should contain 8 to10 servings for each 2 people in your party. Please bring the prepared hot and cold dishes wrapped to place on the serving tables. The club will provide rolls\, margarine\, and beverages. BRING YOUR OWN TABLE SERVICE\, NAPKINS AND SERVING UTENSILS. \nHarvest Table\nPlease bring the products of our harvest to sell at our October dinner. Suggested items are baked goods\, jams and jellies and garden produce. Please mark a suggested price on your donation. Income from the Harvest Table helps the club make charitable contributions to other local natures organizations.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting - "Gray Wolves and the Endangered Species Act"
DESCRIPTION:The Endangered Species Act is under assault by the Trump Administration. We shall examine the controversial issue of wolf reintroduction in light of this assault. Specifically we shall consider the case of wolf reintroduction in Yellowstone. Wolves bring forth many questions as we imagine the natural world as we go forward. Is reintroduction a question for scientists\, politicians\, local residents\, or the nation as a whole? \nGeorge D. Catalano is a SUNY Distinguished Service Professor and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Binghamton University. He has over 40 years in academia having been on the faculty at Binghamton University\, Louisiana State University\, the United States Military Academy at West Point\, the Air Force Institute of Technology and the Polytechnic Institute in Turin\, Italy. George also is a veteran in the U.S. Air Force having served as an aircraft maintenance officer during the Vietnam War and a laser aerodynamicist at Wright Patterson AFB. George has devoted the last several decades of his professional life to the study of wolves and our ethical responsibilities towards them and all of the natural world. George is married to his lovely wife and life partner\, Karen\, and lives with a pack of Alaskan malamutes in Binghamton\, New York.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Improving Habitat for Butterflies and Moths
DESCRIPTION:As a curious observer of nature on her property and in her community\, club board member Colleen Wolpert enjoys sharing the knowledge she has accumulated about improving habitat for a wide variety of insects and the wildlife that depends on them for food. On only ¾ of an acre\, she has had over 50 different species of butterflies and 100s of species of moths. Dragonflies and damselflies hunt by day and different species of fireflies glow at night from May to September. \nProviding them with the food and shelter they require is key to helping to keep their life cycle going throughout the year. Come learn what you can do\, or stop doing\, that will give wildlife the habitat it needs to survive.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Improving Habitat for Forest Birds
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the habitat needs of a suite of forest birds\, and how we can manage forests to provide quality habitat. Management recommendations to improve habitat on a variety of property sizes\, including small woodlots\, will be discussed. \nGuest speaker Suzanne Treyger is the Forest Program Manager for Audubon NY. Suzanne promotes sustainable forestry practices on private and public land by providing outreach and technical assistance to landowners and land managers. This is an important part of a greater effort to improve forest habitat along the Atlantic Flyway for focal bird species in decline. Prior to joining Audubon New York\, Suzanne worked for YardMap\, a citizen science project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Suzanne was also the Stewardship Project Coordinator for New Jersey Audubon\, where she managed public and private lands to enhance and restore habitat for species of conservation concern. She has also worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the New Hampshire Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Program. A native of central New York\, she has a BS in Wildlife Management from the University of New Hampshire\, and a MS from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Forest and Natural Resources Management\, where her research focused on invasive species management issues on private lands in the Adirondack State Park. SUMMARY:Member Meeting - An Accidental Big Year
DESCRIPTION:Club member Carolyn Cooper will present her topic: Accidental Big Year: Birding Festival and Nature Travel Tips from my Nomadic Wanderings. \nWhen your best-laid plans go awry\, sometimes you just have to wing it. In a tale resembling Innocents Abroad meets Into the Wild\, Carolyn Cooper recounts how 2015 accidentally became her Big Year as she crisscrosses the country from the Pacific Northwest to Texas to Southern California and through the Southwest looking for a new home — and new birds. Cooper plans to educate\, entertain\, and inspire with tips\, photos\, and budget-friendly recommendations for your own adventures as she shares how to find 96 species in 3 hours in a mile\, why rockhounding is a competitive sport\, what you should not bring back as a souvenir from a birding festival\, and much more. \nCarolyn Cooper – Nomadic by nature\, Carolyn Cooper has lived and worked throughout the U.S. at everything from computer programmer to stand-up comic\, principally in places with egrets\, ibises\, parrots\, and flamingos. Even as a child she was interested in nature and earth sciences\, but she didn’t get the birding bug until moving within walking distance of the Olympic National Park in Washington State. Now she is amassing a library of natural history guides and looks forward to her next adventure — who knows when or where.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Forest Pests
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Mathers will talk about two non-native forest insect pests\, the emerald ash borer and hemlock woolly adelgid.  Both have recently infested the trees in the Southern Tier of NY and Northern Tier of PA. Ash and hemlock trees are common in our forests and their demise will likely lead to significant ecological impacts. This presentation and discussion will provide some background information on these insects\, their current status\, and some thoughts on how they may alter our forest ecosystems. \nKevin is the Extension Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Social Influences in Song Birds
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker will be Justin Mann.  Migratory songbirds can collect information about their environment or they can utilize social cues from other individuals to assess the quality of a habitat. To examine how migratory songbirds are influenced by social information\, black-and-white warbler songs were broadcast at study sites where that species had not been observed during baseline bird surveys. Experiments were conducted in both low and high quality habitats. We will discuss how social information influences habitat selection in songbirds and what that could mean for attracting species back to restored habitats. \nJustin Mann grew up in the Endless Mountains region of Pennsylvania. At a young age his parents introduced him to the joys of birdwatching\, a hobby which quickly developed into a passion. Justin is currently a PhD student in the Ecology\, Evolution\, and Behavior program in the Department of Biological Sciences at Binghamton University\, where he is studying the behavioral ecology of birdsong. He lives in Endwell\, New York with his wife and three children.

SUMMARY:Porcupine Hike
DESCRIPTION:BU Nature Preserve Hemlock Grove\nSaturday\, February 25 -1:00pm \nWinter can be a dreary time\, so plan to get out for a field trip! Hemlock groves are still green and are full of animal life. We will hike into the Binghamton  University Nature Preserve to visit several hemlock groves.  During the winter\, these areas provide shelter and a haven from the deeper\nsnows for many mammals  and birds.  Highlights often include deer beds\, Red Squirrels\, Great Horned Owls\, Golden-Crowned Kinglets\, Fisher tracks\, and the main object of our labor:  PORCUPINES.  You will learn how to locate a porky through their sign and hopefully we will actually see one (be prepared to crane your neck\, but it is good warbler training). We will also discuss invasive species affecting hemlocks and the surge in the population of the predatory Fisher. \nThe hemlock groves are on a fairly steep hillside and if the snow is deep it can be a rigorous walk.  However\, the lower hemlock grove is before the steeper portion and is fairly accessible.  If the snow is deep think about snowshoes!  Total walk is probably between 1 and 1.5 miles.  Wear sturdy shoes\, dress warmly and bring your binoculars.  Total trip time between 1 to 2 hours.  Park at the upper end of parking lot M and meet at the entrance to the Nature Preserve.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Mariana Crows
DESCRIPTION:The Mariana Crow is a small\, unique forest crow endemic to the islands of Guam and Rota in the Mariana Islands. This species has experienced a dramatic decline in the past 30-40 years. Andria Kroner will discuss their ecology\, the factors that are contributing to their decline\, and what is currently being done to reverse it. We will discuss Andria’s proposed behavioral research which may play a key role in understanding this intelligent species and improving the success of future reintroductions.\nAndria Kroner graduated with a bachelor’s in Wildlife and Conservation Biology from Murray State University. From there she worked as a field biologist focusing\, initially\, on raptor conservation work in the Southwestern US\, during which she spent two years\non the California Condor recovery program field team in Arizona. Though\, in mid-2012 Andria found herself in the Mariana Islands of the western tropical Pacific radio tracking fledglings of the critically endangered Mariana Crow. She has been involved in the Mariana Crow recovery program ever since. Andria is now in her second year as a PhD student at Binghamton University being advised by Dr. Anne Clark. \nSILENT AUCTION\nThe Naturalists’ Club will be holding their annual Silent Auction at our February membership meeting.\nPlease bring any nature related items you would like to donate to the club for this fundraiser. Items can include books\, optics\, gardening supplies\, knick-knacks\, bird feeders\, and more. Come prepared to bid on some treasures to take home! All\nproceeds help fund club activities.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting - New York Forests
DESCRIPTION:New York Forests – An Endangered Species?\n                                                          by Jerry Michael\nThe second-growth forests covering nearly two thirds of our state are facing many threats. Expected impacts from the Emerald Ash Borer and Hemlock Woolley Adelgid are well-understood and relatively near-term. The impacts from climate change are less well-understood\,  but long term. However\, the most serious and pervasive threat is the inability of our most desirable native tree species to successfully reproduce themselves. We will discuss the origin of the crisis a half-century ago\, current scientific and regulatory approaches to solutions\, and the consequences of inaction. \nJerry Michael has been a Master Forest Owner Volunteer with Cornell Cooperative Extension for 21 years. He serves on the Board for the New York Forest\nOwners Association and the Waterman Conservation Education Center. He is\nalso a member of the Broome County Environmental Management Council. In\nhis spare time\, he works at establishing a third-growth forest on his Whitney Point\nwoodlot.
