SUMMARY:Moth Night at CVSP
DESCRIPTION:Due to weather this event has been postponed to its backup date\, Thursday\, May 29th. \nInterested in learning about our local moth populations and how to find them? Join us to learn from club member and local expert\, Colleen Wolpert.\nWe will be meeting at the Pine Plains Shelter where we will have multiple types of moth light stations set up. We will also have educational materials on hand. After a brief introduction to moths Colleen will answer your questions.\nReminders:\n• Watch your step around extension cords.\n• Attendees with children\, please be attentive during the program. Some equipment used will be HOT. Please don’t touch the equipment.\n• Please do not handle moths or other insects. Colleen may handle some of the insects to show folks\, but we ask that participants do not touch any insects for both your safety and the safety of the critters.\n• Do not use any insect repellent! This will keep the moths away. Any product containing Permethrin will kill moths! There might be an opportunity to hold a Cecropia moth to release\, so come pesticide-free.\n• Wear dark colors and long sleeves. Black light to be used. Tuck your pants into your socks. Tie back long hair or wear a hat. The moths (and other critters) like to get tangled in loose hair.\n• Tick Notice: Always perform a tick check following outdoor activities. We ask that you don’t use bug spray as it repels and/or kills moths that we will be drawing in. Since our program is after sunset there is no entrance fee at the park. \nWeather: If the weather looks unfavorable for the evening of our event\, we will post cancellation information on our Facebook page and our website no later than 2:30pm on the day of the event.\nBack up date for this event is Thursday\, May 29. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Member's Meeting - Flower Power
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US – Wednesday\, May 28 at 7:00PM –  Vestal Public Library\, 320 Vestal Pkwy E\, Vestal \nFlower Power\n“Flower Power” is a look at what makes common local wildflowers more than just pretty. Throughout time\, humans have had an intimate relationship with plants\, as food\, as medicine\, and as the stuff of legends\, spiritual beliefs\, and superstition. This program’s focus won’t be on wildflower ID as much as fun and fascinating floral facts (and fiction!) \nAnna Marie Manowarda has worked in the field of environmental education in a variety of settings\, including Rogers Environmental Education Center\, the Ashokan Field Campus\, and New York City Parks; the majority of her career was as Director of Nature Interpretation at Finch Hollow Nature Center (Broome County Dept of Parks and Recreation)\, where the mission was to “increase awareness and appreciation of the natural world within Broome County”. \nZoom Meeting Information\nUse this link to join the meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86125429140?pwd=N2pjMy9mU3RBZTFSZ1JiVGpyam9mUT09\nMeeting ID: 861 2542 9140     Passcode: 948386\nAll participants will be muted until the question and answer period of the presentation. SUMMARY:Spring Ephemeral Plant Walk
DESCRIPTION:After a long winter\, some of the most eager plants to bloom each year are our spring ephemerals. As their name suggests\, these plants are very short lived (sort of…) with sprouting\, blooming\, and seed dispersal all occurring within a few short weeks while sunlight bathes the forest floor as the trees begin to wake up. Middendorf Park in Vestal\, NY hosts a stunning variety of our native ephemerals including Trillium\, Trout Lilies\, and Ramp\, among some more uncommon species. Local naturalist Cam Winzinger will lead this trip. Check out their Science Communication Instagram @camsmagicshoolbus.\nThis trip is open to current club members. Registration is required.Sign up at https://forms.gle/xtwpBJZ7yw2tcJqS8. Cam will provide details on the trip and parking\, which is very limited at Middendorf Park.\n

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - The Pantanal: Realm of the Jaguar
DESCRIPTION:The Pantanal: Realm of the Jaguar\nThe Pantanal of Brazil is a land of breathtaking superlatives. As the world’s largest tropical wetland\, it spans an area 20 times larger than the Everglades. This incredible ecosystem is home to the largest toucan (the Toco)\, the largest parrot (the Hyacinth Macaw)\, and the largest cat in the Americas—the mighty Jaguar. In fact\, the Pantanal boasts the highest density of Jaguars anywhere on the planet. During the dry season\, an impressive concentration of wildlife gathers along the rivers and shrinking pools\, offering spectacular opportunities for observation. \nIn the summer of 2024\, the Lamoureux family journeyed to Brazil with a goal: to encounter the “Big Four” of the Pantanal—Jaguar\, Giant River Otter\, Giant Anteater\, and Tapir. Did they succeed? Along the way\, they witnessed over 200 species of birds\, vast numbers of caimans\, and many charismatic Capybaras! Join them on this unforgettable adventure through Brazil’s Pantanal in this multimedia presentation. \nVictor S. Lamoureux is a Professor of Biology at SUNY-Broome Community College and the President of the Naturalists’ Club of Broome County. A graduate of Binghamton University and an avid amateur nature photographer\, Victor travels mostly to explore the world’s great biomes. He and his wife Sheri have raised three children in Vestal\, all of whom will be in Boston next year. \nZoom Meeting Information\nUse this link to join the meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86125429140?pwd=N2pjMy9mU3RBZTFSZ1JiVGpyam9mUT09\nMeeting ID: 861 2542 9140     Passcode: 948386  \nAll participants will be muted until the question and answer period of the presentation. SUMMARY:Member Meeting - ZOOM Only - How Birds Created the World
DESCRIPTION:How Birds Created the World… and Other Stories from The Complete Language of Birds \nAncient Egyptians believed that the Earth began as an egg laid by a giant goose. Ojibwa people of America’s northern plains tell of a Great Flood that swept away the world’s evils\, and the bird that braved the deep waters to bring a bit of soil up from the bottom to restart the continent. European scientists once believed that geese survived the winters by turning themselves into barnacles and adhering to the bottoms of ships\, transforming back into birds in spring. These and many other tales told in Randi Minetor’s latest book\, The Complete Language of Birds\, bring us back to a time when birds seemed like magical beings with the answers for so many of the world’s questions. \nBestselling author Randi Minetor writes the Birdfinding and Best Easy Bird Guides series for Falcon Guides/Globe Pequot Press and is the author of Backyard Birding and Butterfly Gardening for Lyons Press. Her most recent book\, The Complete Language of Birds\, is an encyclopedia that unites classic illustrations\, science\, folklore\, and mythology about more than 400 bird species around the world. She writes for Birding Magazine\, is a regional report editor for North American Birds\, and has served for three years as president of the Rochester Birding Association in New York State. SUMMARY:Porcupine Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join on us for a trip to a hemlock grove! During the winter\, hemlock groves provide shelter and a haven from the deeper snows for many mammals and birds. Highlights often include deer beds\, red squirrels\, great horned owls\, golden-crowned kinglets\, fisher tracks\, and the main object of our labor: PORCUPINES.\n\nWe will show you how to locate a porcupine and hopefully we will actually see one (be prepared to crane your neck\, but it is good warbler training). We will also discuss invasive species affecting hemlocks and the surge in the population of the predatory fisher.\n\nTotal walk is probably between 1 and 1.5 miles. Wear sturdy shoes with good traction and bring your binoculars. Total trip time between 1 to 2 hours. Location will be announced closer to the date of the trip.\nLocation TBD.\n\nField trips are members only and registration is required. Register to attend online here:https://forms.gle/Y7dTbw7xNWYybftm8 \n\n\n
