SUMMARY:Moth Night at CVSP
DESCRIPTION:Due to weather this event has been postponed to its backup date\, Thursday\, May 29th. \nInterested in learning about our local moth populations and how to find them? Join us to learn from club member and local expert\, Colleen Wolpert.\nWe will be meeting at the Pine Plains Shelter where we will have multiple types of moth light stations set up. We will also have educational materials on hand. After a brief introduction to moths Colleen will answer your questions.\nReminders:\n• Watch your step around extension cords.\n• Attendees with children\, please be attentive during the program. Some equipment used will be HOT. Please don’t touch the equipment.\n• Please do not handle moths or other insects. Colleen may handle some of the insects to show folks\, but we ask that participants do not touch any insects for both your safety and the safety of the critters.\n• Do not use any insect repellent! This will keep the moths away. Any product containing Permethrin will kill moths! There might be an opportunity to hold a Cecropia moth to release\, so come pesticide-free.\n• Wear dark colors and long sleeves. Black light to be used. Tuck your pants into your socks. Tie back long hair or wear a hat. The moths (and other critters) like to get tangled in loose hair.\n• Tick Notice: Always perform a tick check following outdoor activities. We ask that you don’t use bug spray as it repels and/or kills moths that we will be drawing in. Since our program is after sunset there is no entrance fee at the park. \nWeather: If the weather looks unfavorable for the evening of our event\, we will post cancellation information on our Facebook page and our website no later than 2:30pm on the day of the event.\nBack up date for this event is Thursday\, May 29. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Harvest Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual Harvest Dinner. Our program will be presented by Bill Evans whose topic will be: THE EARLY EFFORTS TO MINIMIZE BIRD MORTALITY AT TALL COMMUNICATIONS TOWERS – STORIES FROM BROOME COUNTY. \nBeginning in the 1950s\, large bird kills were regularly documented at tall TV towers across North America. The United State Fish & Wildlife Service estimated that millions of songbirds were being killed annually. In 1997\, with the threat on the horizon of 1000 new tall TV towers to be built for digital television infrastructure\, an effort arose to mitigate the kills. Bill Evans will present his recollections of those earlier years\, including stories involving Broome County. \nBill Evans is director of Old Bird Inc.\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on nocturnal bird migration research & education. For the past 30 years Bill has studied the vocalizations birds give while in nocturnal migration. His expertise on nocturnal bird migration led him into active involvement with efforts to mitigate avian fatalities at communications towers\, wind turbines\, and oil & gas drilling rigs. His current research is directed toward developing a new index for songbird populations and understanding the impacts of artificial light on night-migrating birds. Bill’s research has been featured on PBS\, BBC\, NPR and in Science\, The New York Times and numerous science-news periodicals. Bill lives with his wife and two children in the Town of Danby\, NY. \nPotluck Dinner\nYour food contributions should contain 8 to10 servings for each 2 people in your party. Please bring the prepared hot and cold dishes wrapped to place on the serving tables. The club will provide rolls\, margarine\, and beverages. BRING YOUR OWN TABLE SERVICE\, NAPKINS AND SERVING UTENSILS. \nHarvest Table\nPlease bring the products of our harvest to sell at our October dinner. Suggested items are baked goods\, jams and jellies and garden produce. Please mark a suggested price on your donation. SUMMARY:Member Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Our Annual Member Picnic will be on Wednesday\, June 26 at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton. Please bring your own table service and a dish to pass. Drinks (soda\, water\, juice) will be provided. If you don’t have a dish to pass\, come anyway\, as there is always plenty of good food. \nProgram: History of Otsiningo Park\nIn 1971\, Dolores Elliott directed salvage archeological excavations at Otsiningo Park during the construction of the Comfort Station. She will talk about the history of the land and will point out where the excavations took place and where the prehistoric houses were located. \nMore than 12\,000 years ago\, the land on what became Otsiningo Park was buried under a mile of ice. As the glacier retreated\, animals such as mastodons\, mammoths\, and other megafauna moved north into our valleys. People we call PaleoIndians followed their prey north. The big animals became extinct\, the climate warmed\, and berry and nut producing plants began to grow here. The cultures of the people changed over the millenia to adapt to the changing environment. Less than 1\,000 years ago a horticulture economy based on many varieties of corn\, beans\, and squash evolved. By 400 years ago people related to the Iroquois were living here. Artifacts documenting life here over the last 12 millenia have been found in Otsiningo Park. \nDirections to Picnic Pavilion: Otsiningo Park is located near the intersection of Upper Front Street and Bevier Street with the entrance off of Bevier Street. After entering the park follow the loop. Shortly after the volleyball pits\, take a right on the driveway to the community gardens follow the driveway to the Pavilion located near the old I-81 rest stop.
