SUMMARY:Membership Meeting - Humpback Whales - Composers of the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Humpback whales are the maestros of the marine world. Their “songs” actually develop and change over time – an example of cultural evolution in a non-human species. Katy Payne and Ann Warde of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Bioacoustics Research Program have teamed up for this audio-visual presentation during which they will introduce the audience to whales\, the sounds they make\, and the concept of deep listening. \nOur September Meeting will feature an Open House.  Barb Cole\, club member and  licensed wildlife rehabilitator\, will bring a rescued animal to the September Open House meeting. At the meeting\, we encourage members to show their support for local wildlife rehabilitators by helping to collect donations of rehabilitation supplies. Suggested donations include: small coffee filters\, baby food\, powdered milk\, old blankets and towels\, dog food\, and paper towels. \nMeetings are open to the public.  The talk will include a question & answer session and light refreshments.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting - "Smart" Feeders and Optimal Bird Foraging
DESCRIPTION:Americans spend billions of dollars each year feeding birds and provide an enormous food  subsidy. But little research has been conducted to understand how birds use the food we provide\, and how that food influences the survival and behavior of birds. \nUsing passive integrated transponders (PIT tags) and “smart” bird feeders\, we’re tracking the feeding behavior of individual birds and gaining an unprecedented view of their activity. This presentation will reveal how we use technology to study feeding behavior\, and will explore the movements\, survival\, and daily and annual activity patterns of our favorite feeder birds. \nSpeaker David Bonter is an ornithologist working as Senior Lecturer at Cornell University and Assistant Director of Citizen Science at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting - Broome's Best Birds
DESCRIPTION:BROOME’S BEST BIRDS\nDid you know that birders in Broome County sighted and reported 221 species to Cornell’s ebird? And that our top-birder Dan Watkins saw 207 of those? Many had their biggest totals ever for Broome County. \nCome relive 2013’s birds as participants in the Marie Petuh Birding Challenge discuss their unusual finds\, their big misses\, their great days\, their embarrassing mishaps\, their favorite Broome County hotspots\, the great fun and what they hope for in 2014. \nThis talk will be moderated and put together by Victor Lamoureux but we will have many people sharing their stories as we relive Broome’s Best Birds 2013.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:How Introduced Plants\, Worms\, and Deer are Reshaping Our Neighborhoods\n\nAll habitats of the Northeast and their inhabitants are currently facing an unprecedented challenge by needing to simultaneously respond to global climate change\, invasive species\, habitat fragmentation\, and increasing deer herds. Which species can be assumed safe? Which species will likely go extinct? And what is the role of humans not only as facilitators of global change but also as stewards of our natural heritage? \nDr. Blossey will focus on the interplay of deer\, worms\, and invasive plants and address what individuals and organizations can do to help conservation efforts. Bernd Blossey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University. \nPhoto provided by Christina Rollo\, http://www.rollosphotos.com.
