SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Improving Habitat for Butterflies and Moths
DESCRIPTION:As a curious observer of nature on her property and in her community\, club board member Colleen Wolpert enjoys sharing the knowledge she has accumulated about improving habitat for a wide variety of insects and the wildlife that depends on them for food. On only ¾ of an acre\, she has had over 50 different species of butterflies and 100s of species of moths. Dragonflies and damselflies hunt by day and different species of fireflies glow at night from May to September. \nProviding them with the food and shelter they require is key to helping to keep their life cycle going throughout the year. Come learn what you can do\, or stop doing\, that will give wildlife the habitat it needs to survive.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - "Manta Rays and Other Marine Megafauna"
DESCRIPTION:Marine scientist Michelle Carpenter will talk about how fascinating manta rays are\, the dangers they findthemselves in\, and working with the Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF). MMF is an international NGO that focuses on the conservation of giant ocean animals through pioneering research\, education\, and sustainable conservation solutions. She has been working with manta rays in Mozambique and Komodo National Park\, mainly contributing to long term research projects that assess populations through photoidentifion Michelle’s work includes research and conservation of whale sharks\, both species of manta ray\, turtles\, humpback whales\, zebra sharks\, dolphins\, and other sharks and ray species. She will discuss how most marine species are threatened and why the ocean is in dire need of our help. \nMichelle Carpenter is from Binghamton\, NY and completed her bachelor of marine science at Eckerd College St. Petersburg Florida. Since then she has traveled to work in marine conservation. She specializes in sharks and rays and has spent the last year and a half researching manta rays in Mozambique and Komodo National Park. This year she will begin a masters on manta rays with the University of Cape Town in South Africa

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Improving Habitat for Forest Birds
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the habitat needs of a suite of forest birds\, and how we can manage forests to provide quality habitat. Management recommendations to improve habitat on a variety of property sizes\, including small woodlots\, will be discussed. \nGuest speaker Suzanne Treyger is the Forest Program Manager for Audubon NY. Suzanne promotes sustainable forestry practices on private and public land by providing outreach and technical assistance to landowners and land managers. This is an important part of a greater effort to improve forest habitat along the Atlantic Flyway for focal bird species in decline. Prior to joining Audubon New York\, Suzanne worked for YardMap\, a citizen science project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Suzanne was also the Stewardship Project Coordinator for New Jersey Audubon\, where she managed public and private lands to enhance and restore habitat for species of conservation concern. She has also worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the New Hampshire Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Program. A native of central New York\, she has a BS in Wildlife Management from the University of New Hampshire\, and a MS from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Forest and Natural Resources Management\, where her research focused on invasive species management issues on private lands in the Adirondack State Park. Suzanne enjoys being outdoors alongside her husband\, daughter\, and dog. \nSilent Auction – We will be holding our annual Silent Auction at this meeting.  Please bring any nature related items you would like to donate to the club for this fundraiser. Items can include books\, optics\, gardening supplies\, knick-knacks\, bird feeders\, and more. Come prepared to bid on some treasures to take home! In a tale resembling Innocents Abroad meets Into the Wild\, Carolyn Cooper recounts how 2015 accidentally became her Big Year as she crisscrosses the country from the Pacific Northwest to Texas to Southern California and through the Southwest looking for a new home — and new birds.  Cooper plans to educate\, entertain\, and inspire with tips\, photos\, and budget-friendly recommendations for your own adventures as she shares how to find 96 species in 3 hours in a mile\, why rockhounding is a competitive sport\, what you should not bring back as a souvenir from a birding festival\, and much more. \nCarolyn Cooper – Nomadic by nature\, Carolyn Cooper has lived and worked throughout the U.S. at everything from computer programmer to stand-up comic\, principally in places with egrets\, ibises\, parrots\, and flamingos. Even as a child she was interested in nature and earth sciences\, but she didn’t get the birding bug until moving within walking distance of the Olympic National Park in Washington State. Now she is amassing a library of natural history guides and looks forward to her next adventure — who knows when or where.

DESCRIPTION:In lieu of our normal Wednesday December meeting\, our meeting will be moved to THURSDAY evening\, DECEMBER 14.  This is for an EXCLUSIVE\, “first-look” at the new NatureTrek exhibit at the Roberson Museum and Science Center. The exhibit features realistic dioramas of local habitats and utilizes the taxidermy of Lee Loomis throughout. Rick Marsi\, who consulted on the exhibit\, will be on hand to give some remarks. \nThe exhibit will not be open until early 2018\, so this is an early viewing for Naturalists’ Club members. We will have our normal meeting and refreshments before our tour of the  NatureTrek exhibit.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Social Influences in Song Birds
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker will be Justin Mann.  Migratory songbirds can collect information about their environment or they can utilize social cues from other individuals to assess the quality of a habitat. To examine how migratory songbirds are influenced by social information\, black-and-white warbler songs were broadcast at study sites where that species had not been observed during baseline bird surveys. Experiments were conducted in both low and high quality habitats. We will discuss how social information influences habitat selection in songbirds and what that could mean for attracting species back to restored habitats. \nJustin Mann grew up in the Endless Mountains region of Pennsylvania. At a young age his parents introduced him to the joys of birdwatching\, a hobby which quickly developed into a passion. Justin is currently a PhD student in the Ecology\, Evolution\, and Behavior program in the Department of Biological Sciences at Binghamton University\, where he is studying the behavioral ecology of birdsong. He lives in Endwell\, New York with his wife and three children.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Mariana Crows
DESCRIPTION:The Mariana Crow is a small\, unique forest crow endemic to the islands of Guam and Rota in the Mariana Islands. This species has experienced a dramatic decline in the past 30-40 years. Andria Kroner will discuss their ecology\, the factors that are contributing to their decline\, and what is currently being done to reverse it. We will discuss Andria’s proposed behavioral research which may play a key role in understanding this intelligent species and improving the success of future reintroductions.\nAndria Kroner graduated with a bachelor’s in Wildlife and Conservation Biology from Murray State University. From there she worked as a field biologist focusing\, initially\, on raptor conservation work in the Southwestern US\, during which she spent two years\non the California Condor recovery program field team in Arizona. Though\, in mid-2012 Andria found herself in the Mariana Islands of the western tropical Pacific radio tracking fledglings of the critically endangered Mariana Crow. She has been involved in the Mariana Crow recovery program ever since. SUMMARY:Member Meeting - “PHOTOGRAPHING WILD” by Teri Franzen
DESCRIPTION:Teri Franzen is passionate about observing and photographing wildlife on its terms\, wild\, unaltered and undisturbed.  She has been a wildlife photographer since 2012 after having met up with a Northern Goshawk on her very first outing. Since then she’s photographed mammals and birds throughout the US as well as Italy and Africa. Her two most involved ventures have been photographing Wood Ducks in 2015 and Peregrine Falcons in 2016\, both requiring long hours in makeshift blinds.  She will discuss these two project\, as well as other photographic work\, for our November meeting. \nTeri Franzen has been a software engineer since the early 1990s\, developing fly-by-wire flight control systems for fixed and rotary winged aircraft. \nLocation: Vestal Public Library\, Vestal NY

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting - The Return of the American Chestnut
DESCRIPTION:As a keystone species and mast-producing canopy tree\, the loss of the American chestnut from the Eastern US was an ecological and economic disaster for the region more than a hundred years ago. This native species\, once classified as functionally extinct\, is now poised to make a comeback thanks to modern technology and ground-breaking research.\nThe American Chestnut Research and Restoration Project will share their inspiring success story\, and elaborate on how genetic engineering can benefit the fields of conservation and restoration. \nDr. Allison Oakes is currently a postdoctoral research associate and maintains the production of micropropagated American chestnut shoots of over one hundred transgenic event lines\, eight wild-type lines\, and six hybrid lines. She is currently investigating the effect of different growth regulator concentrations on shoot development\, and is continuing her dissertation research focus on improving rooting and acclimatization of American chestnut shoots. \nDr. Oakes received her doctorate at The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse and continues to work there. \nDon’t forget that our annual May Plant Sale will take place during this meeting! Be sure to stop by so you can pick up some plants for your garden!

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting – You\, Me\, Birds and Global Warming
DESCRIPTION:In her talk\, Kim relates her love of science\, nature\, and birds to the current climate crisis and its implications for biodiversity.  She shares her personal response to the climate crisis from her perspective as a parent\, a birder\, and a professional ornithologist\, and closes her talk with a serious but empowering message\, outlining a “Simple 5 Point Plan” that bird-lovers can use to organize their own response to climate change. \nOriginally from upstate New York\, Bostwick received her PhD from the University of Kansas in 2002\, and since then has worked as the curator of birds and mammals at Cornell University.  Bostwick’s research has focused on bird behavior and evolution\, allowing her to travel throughout Central and South America\, as well as to South Africa\, and Papua New Guinea.  In 2005 Bostwick was featured in Nature’s Deep Jungles three-part series\, where she danced like a Red-capped Manakin to the tune of Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean”.  This clip of video was extracted and posted to YouTube\, where it went viral and has been viewed millions of times\, spawned many knock-offs\, and brought great fame and many fans to a very deserving\, but otherwise little known bird.  Her research on the Club-winged Manakin was featured in National Geographic in May of 2012.  Recently\, spurred by the birth of her own two children\, Bostwick decided to reorient her career to become more active in science outreach\, specifically as it relates to climate change. She is now using her scientific literacy and communication skills to translate climate science for general audiences\, with the specific goal of motivating behavioral changes through science-based story-telling.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting – Kenyan Safari with Friends
DESCRIPTION:In 2005 Dolores Elliott traveled to Kenya with an Iroquois beadworker to help him revive beadwork among several groups in Kenya. While there she made friends with a Maasai man whose dream it was to start a safari company. In 2014 Dolores invited four friends to join her on safari with David\, whose dream had been realized. David took them to several game reserves\, villages\, museums\, schools\, and to visit his family. Of course\, they saw tens of thousands of wild animals including the “big five” and herds of zebras\, many species of antelopes\, and giraffes. They went to an elephant nursery\, dined with rhinos and crocodiles\, and saw hundreds of species of birds. This personal safari was an adventure of a lifetime. She will share pictures of some of the highlights. Dolores Elliott is a long time Naturalists’ Club member who joined 1967 after she met several Weedwalkers who volunteered at an archaeological excavation that she was directing. She started with butterflies at an early age\, received her Master’s in social work\, and then even started her own “butterfly therapy” program to work with children and adults. She used to drive the back roads of Broome with Harriet Marsi and the “Butterfly Bunch”. Now shes work on educating the public about all aspects of the butterfly life cycle. DESCRIPTION:Dylan Horvath will discuss the Caspian Terns of Oregon. He will share stories about his experience in Caspian Tern research in the Columbia River Estuary in the Northwest (Oregon/Washington).  Dylan lived on East Sand Island for 4 months monitoring and guarding the largest Caspian Tern colony on the west coast.  Other wildlife antics on the island were often just as interesting as the terns themselves! \nDylan Horvath is the Steward of Natural Areas of Binghamton University and a Wildlife Biologist.  He not only oversees activities and maintenance of the campus’ natural areas\, but also develops and coordinates educational programs for area school groups\, as well as facilitates the research and academic use of these areas.  In addition\, Dylan has spent nearly 15 years as a wildlife field biologist researching various organisms from salamanders to birds\, bats\, and wolverines. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting – Clark's Nutcrackers & Whitebark Pine Decline
DESCRIPTION:Whitebark pine and Clark’s Nutcrackers have a fascinating relationship: the trees provide rich\, fatty seeds\, and the birds “plant” the trees’ seeds —a single bird may hide up to 98\,000 seeds in a year. The food caches help the birds get through the winter\, and the leftovers grow into new trees. In fact\, whitebark pine trees sprout almost exclusively from nutcracker seed caches. This dependency has led to considerable concern for both species because whitebark pine ecosystems are rapidly disappearing in the western United States.\nLearn how research has advanced our understanding of the magnitude of the impact of the decline of whitebark pine on Clark’s Nutcrackers’ behavior and populations and how this data will aid in the design of biologically informed management interventions which will help maintain a healthy ecosystem by ensuring persistence of nutcrackers throughout their range. \nTaza Schaming\nTaza tells us that her career in ornithological and conservation research is not only her professional goal\, it is one of her greatest passions. A graduate of Cornell University\, Taza is currently working on finishing her PhD\, studying the topic she will be discussing at our meeting. \nThrough her research\, she is striving to create a better understanding of the intersection between conservation\, ornithology\, behavioral ecology\, and community ecology.

DESCRIPTION:Humpback whales are the maestros of the marine world. Their “songs” actually develop and change over time – an example of cultural evolution in a non-human species. Katy Payne and Ann Warde of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Bioacoustics Research Program have teamed up for this audio-visual presentation during which they will introduce the audience to whales\, the sounds they make\, and the concept of deep listening. \nOur September Meeting will feature an Open House.  Barb Cole\, club member and  licensed wildlife rehabilitator\, will bring a rescued animal to the September Open House meeting. At the meeting\, we encourage members to show their support for local wildlife rehabilitators by helping to collect donations of rehabilitation supplies. Suggested donations include: small coffee filters\, baby food\, powdered milk\, old blankets and towels\, dog food\, and paper towels. \nMeetings are open to the public.  The talk will include a question & answer session and light refreshments.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting - "Smart" Feeders and Optimal Bird Foraging
DESCRIPTION:Americans spend billions of dollars each year feeding birds and provide an enormous food  subsidy. But little research has been conducted to understand how birds use the food we provide\, and how that food influences the survival and behavior of birds. \nUsing passive integrated transponders (PIT tags) and “smart” bird feeders\, we’re tracking the feeding behavior of individual birds and gaining an unprecedented view of their activity. This presentation will reveal how we use technology to study feeding behavior\, and will explore the movements\, survival\, and daily and annual activity patterns of our favorite feeder birds. \nSpeaker David Bonter is an ornithologist working as Senior Lecturer at Cornell University and Assistant Director of Citizen Science at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
