SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Fish Crows
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker and Binghamton University graduate student Connor Loomis will talk about how Broome and Cayuga counties represent a unique area of North America in that they have 3 Corvus species living together in a shared landscape\, including the Common Raven\, the American Crow and the Fish Crow. The smallest of these species\, the Fish Crow is a new arrival to the north\, becoming established in the late 1970’s. They exist here\, in one of their northernmost breeding colonies\, in small numbers (between 60-150 individuals). Much of Fish Crows’ life history\, ecology\, and genetic diversity remain unstudied. In a time where conservation efforts must consider the implications of global change\, it is imperative that we document basic life-history and behavioral characteristics of species to understand the threats that face them. In addition\, the quantification of genetic diversity within this northern population can help elucidate trends regarding population health or divergence. Identifying the traits and environmental factors that cause population ranges to expand and contract with our changing environment allows for insights into how this population and others will respond to further human-induced change. \nConnor O’Horo Loomis is a PH. D. student and teaching assistant in Binghamton University’s Ecology\, Evolution and Behavior Department\, where he teaches Introduction to Population Biology and Zoology. He is a part of the Crow Research group\, a joint research group between Binghamton University and Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology. \nAs always\, Naturalists’ Club member meetings are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Pollination Biology and Pollinator Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Pollination is a critical ecosystem service\, and one that is mostly provided by flower visiting animals. In addition to supporting terrestrial ecosystems\, pollination is also directly responsible for much of the food human populations consume. Unfortunately\, global change is weakening these critical interactions\, and some pollinator species and communities are in decline. In this talk\, I will explore some interesting facts and examples of plant-pollinator interactions and conclude with some simple steps we all can take to promote pollinator diversity and abundance in our own backyards.[/caption] \nGeorge Meindl grew up in a biodiversity hotspot in Northern California\, where he became passionate about plant diversity and species interactions. Following a MS degree at Humboldt State University studying pollination of carnivorous plants\, he completed a PhD studying the impacts of floral metal accumulation on plant-pollinator interactions at the University of Pittsburgh. In his free time\, he enjoys the outdoors\, being an amateur mycologist\, and playing disc golf. He is now an Assistant Professor in the Environmental Studies Program at Binghamton University. \nAs always\, Naturalists’ Club member meetings are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Understanding Threats to Amphibians and How to Get Involved
DESCRIPTION:Human activities are threatening freshwater ecosystems across the globe.  Amphibians are particularly vulnerable to human activities with populations declining worldwide. Understanding the myriad ways our activities influence amphibians is paramount to conservation efforts. \nMembers of the Hua lab will provide a broad overview of recent work examining various threats to amphibians\, including light pollution\, road salt\, and invasive species. Specifically\, graduate student\, Grascen Shidemantle\, will discuss her recent discoveries regarding the effect of light pollution at night on amphibian growth and development. Graduate student\, Nicholas Buss\, will speak about how exposure to low amounts of road salts can make amphibians more susceptible to disease. Finally\, graduate student\, Devin DiGiacopo\, will talk about how leaf litter from invasive plants can affect amphibian susceptibility to other contaminants. Collectively\, we hope to convey that integrating an ecological perspective is crucial to understanding the threats facing amphibians. \nIn order to protect amphibians and the freshwater ecosystems that they live in\, we need to effectively communicate and engage with groups beyond the scientific community. As such\, graduate student\, Vanessa Wuerthner\, will highlight the Hua lab’s efforts at using art and citizen science to facilitate research and communication. \nOur annual Silent Auction will also take place at this meeting.  Please bring any nature related items you would like to donate to the club for this fundraiser. Items can include books\, optics\, gardening supplies\, knick-knacks\, bird feeders\, and more.  Come prepared to bid on some treasures to take home! Your generosity in both donations and purchases helps the Naturalists’ Club make charitable contributions to other local Nature related organizations. \nALTERNATE PROGRAM – A GALAPAGOS DREAM\nThere is a chance that our speakers may be pulled in to the field for research if warm weather brings the wood frogs out of hibernation. In the unlikely event of their unavailability\, we will hear from club member Renee DePrato who will talk about her recent trip to the Galapagos. Armed with a new camera and a sense of adventure\, she fulfilled her dream of visiting these islands which maintain an almost mythical status for most nature lovers. \nIn this photo filled presentation\, you will learn what makes the Galapagos islands special and enjoy photos of the diverse flora and fauna of these islands. Renee DePrato is an avid birder and nature lover who enjoys traveling to see new wildlife. \nAs always\, meetings are free and open to the public!

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - An Insider's View of Denali
DESCRIPTION:Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska is a shining star in the National Park system of the United States. Larger than the state of New Hampshire with nearly a third of it designated as “Wilderness”\, this intact ecosystem houses incredible diversity\, landscapes\, and a magic all its own. Framed by the Alaska Range and Mount Denali\, visitors can enjoy charismatic megafauna\, incredible wildflowers\, and unimaginably large vistas. Come enjoy a photographic journey of some of our favorite parts of the Park and learn what makes Denali so special. \nMargeaux Maerz is originally from Vestal\, but has found a way to spend most of her time traveling. After graduating from the University of Georgia with her degree in Ecology\, Margeaux worked as an environmental educator and naturalist guide for various non-for-profits and government organizations along the east coast and abroad. \nSam Wilson has been working in conservation and environmental education for the past 10 years\, including for NJ Audubon as a naturalist at the Nature Center in Cape May\, New Jersey. Sam is also an occasional writer and photographer for magazines like Cape May Magazine\, Audubon\, and American Birding Association’s Birding. Sam was honored this year with a photo in the 2018 Audubon Photography Awards Top 100.  \nMargeaux and Sam met in Cape May\, NJ in 2014 when they both worked as educators for NJ Audubon. Over the past few years together the travel bug bit…hard…and they have since traveled around the southern US\, East Asia\, Southeast Asia\, England\, and Alaska—all in pursuit of birds and wildlife. Margeaux started her career in Alaska in 2016 working for the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies in Homer\, Alaska. Both Margeaux and Sam quickly fell in love with the wilderness of Alaska and took positions as Naturalist Guides for Camp Denali and North Face Lodge in Denali National Park and Preserve. As guides for private lodges housed at the western end of the Park road\, they enjoy uncommon access to Denali and its unadulterated wilderness. It is their time spent exploring Denali that inspired Margeaux and Sam to give this photographic journey of one of the most beautiful places in North America.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Improving Habitat for Butterflies and Moths
DESCRIPTION:As a curious observer of nature on her property and in her community\, club board member Colleen Wolpert enjoys sharing the knowledge she has accumulated about improving habitat for a wide variety of insects and the wildlife that depends on them for food. On only ¾ of an acre\, she has had over 50 different species of butterflies and 100s of species of moths. Dragonflies and damselflies hunt by day and different species of fireflies glow at night from May to September. \nProviding them with the food and shelter they require is key to helping to keep their life cycle going throughout the year. Come learn what you can do\, or stop doing\, that will give wildlife the habitat it needs to survive.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Improving Habitat for Forest Birds
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the habitat needs of a suite of forest birds\, and how we can manage forests to provide quality habitat. Management recommendations to improve habitat on a variety of property sizes\, including small woodlots\, will be discussed. \nGuest speaker Suzanne Treyger is the Forest Program Manager for Audubon NY. Suzanne promotes sustainable forestry practices on private and public land by providing outreach and technical assistance to landowners and land managers. This is an important part of a greater effort to improve forest habitat along the Atlantic Flyway for focal bird species in decline. Prior to joining Audubon New York\, Suzanne worked for YardMap\, a citizen science project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Suzanne was also the Stewardship Project Coordinator for New Jersey Audubon\, where she managed public and private lands to enhance and restore habitat for species of conservation concern. She has also worked for the Smithsonian Institution and the New Hampshire Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Program. A native of central New York\, she has a BS in Wildlife Management from the University of New Hampshire\, and a MS from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Forest and Natural Resources Management\, where her research focused on invasive species management issues on private lands in the Adirondack State Park. Suzanne enjoys being outdoors alongside her husband\, daughter\, and dog. \nSilent Auction – We will be holding our annual Silent Auction at this meeting.  Please bring any nature related items you would like to donate to the club for this fundraiser. Items can include books\, optics\, gardening supplies\, knick-knacks\, bird feeders\, and more. Come prepared to bid on some treasures to take home! SUMMARY:Member Meeting - An Accidental Big Year
DESCRIPTION:Club member Carolyn Cooper will present her topic: Accidental Big Year: Birding Festival and Nature Travel Tips from my Nomadic Wanderings. \nWhen your best-laid plans go awry\, sometimes you just have to wing it. In a tale resembling Innocents Abroad meets Into the Wild\, Carolyn Cooper recounts how 2015 accidentally became her Big Year as she crisscrosses the country from the Pacific Northwest to Texas to Southern California and through the Southwest looking for a new home — and new birds. Cooper plans to educate\, entertain\, and inspire with tips\, photos\, and budget-friendly recommendations for your own adventures as she shares how to find 96 species in 3 hours in a mile\, why rockhounding is a competitive sport\, what you should not bring back as a souvenir from a birding festival\, and much more. \nCarolyn Cooper – Nomadic by nature\, Carolyn Cooper has lived and worked throughout the U.S. at everything from computer programmer to stand-up comic\, principally in places with egrets\, ibises\, parrots\, and flamingos. Even as a child she was interested in nature and earth sciences\, but she didn’t get the birding bug until moving within walking distance of the Olympic National Park in Washington State. Now she is amassing a library of natural history guides and looks forward to her next adventure — who knows when or where.

SUMMARY:Member Meeting - Social Influences in Song Birds
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker will be Justin Mann.  Migratory songbirds can collect information about their environment or they can utilize social cues from other individuals to assess the quality of a habitat. To examine how migratory songbirds are influenced by social information\, black-and-white warbler songs were broadcast at study sites where that species had not been observed during baseline bird surveys. Experiments were conducted in both low and high quality habitats. We will discuss how social information influences habitat selection in songbirds and what that could mean for attracting species back to restored habitats. \nJustin Mann grew up in the Endless Mountains region of Pennsylvania. At a young age his parents introduced him to the joys of birdwatching\, a hobby which quickly developed into a passion. Justin is currently a PhD student in the Ecology\, Evolution\, and Behavior program in the Department of Biological Sciences at Binghamton University\, where he is studying the behavioral ecology of birdsong. He lives in Endwell\, New York with his wife and three children.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting – You\, Me\, Birds and Global Warming
DESCRIPTION:In her talk\, Kim relates her love of science\, nature\, and birds to the current climate crisis and its implications for biodiversity.  She shares her personal response to the climate crisis from her perspective as a parent\, a birder\, and a professional ornithologist\, and closes her talk with a serious but empowering message\, outlining a “Simple 5 Point Plan” that bird-lovers can use to organize their own response to climate change. \nOriginally from upstate New York\, Bostwick received her PhD from the University of Kansas in 2002\, and since then has worked as the curator of birds and mammals at Cornell University.  Bostwick’s research has focused on bird behavior and evolution\, allowing her to travel throughout Central and South America\, as well as to South Africa\, and Papua New Guinea.  In 2005 Bostwick was featured in Nature’s Deep Jungles three-part series\, where she danced like a Red-capped Manakin to the tune of Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean”.  This clip of video was extracted and posted to YouTube\, where it went viral and has been viewed millions of times\, spawned many knock-offs\, and brought great fame and many fans to a very deserving\, but otherwise little known bird.  Her research on the Club-winged Manakin was featured in National Geographic in May of 2012.  Recently\, spurred by the birth of her own two children\, Bostwick decided to reorient her career to become more active in science outreach\, specifically as it relates to climate change. She is now using her scientific literacy and communication skills to translate climate science for general audiences\, with the specific goal of motivating behavioral changes through science-based story-telling.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting – Kenyan Safari with Friends
DESCRIPTION:In 2005 Dolores Elliott traveled to Kenya with an Iroquois beadworker to help him revive beadwork among several groups in Kenya. While there she made friends with a Maasai man whose dream it was to start a safari company. In 2014 Dolores invited four friends to join her on safari with David\, whose dream had been realized. David took them to several game reserves\, villages\, museums\, schools\, and to visit his family. Of course\, they saw tens of thousands of wild animals including the “big five” and herds of zebras\, many species of antelopes\, and giraffes. They went to an elephant nursery\, dined with rhinos and crocodiles\, and saw hundreds of species of birds. This personal safari was an adventure of a lifetime. She will share pictures of some of the highlights. Dolores Elliott is a long time Naturalists’ Club member who joined 1967 after she met several Weedwalkers who volunteered at an archaeological excavation that she was directing. She has presented several programs in the past. Currently\, she directs the Iroquois Studies Association.

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting – Caterpillar & Moth Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Gardening for butterflies and moths (i.e.\, leps) is more than planting nectar sources for adults. Learn how you can assist them in all stages of their lifecycle as well as distinguish them from pests\, so that all of us can enjoy these beautiful creatures in the future. \nColleen Wolpert is a butterfly and moth enthusiast and long-time member of the Naturalists’ Club. She started with butterflies at an early age\, received her Master’s in social work\, and then even started her own “butterfly therapy” program to work with children and adults. She used to drive the back roads of Broome with Harriet Marsi and the “Butterfly Bunch”. Now shes work on educating the public about all aspects of the butterfly life cycle. Her enthusiasm is infectious. Come learn about how you can get your yard ready for lepidoptera this spring!

SUMMARY:Membership Meeting – Clark's Nutcrackers & Whitebark Pine Decline
DESCRIPTION:Whitebark pine and Clark’s Nutcrackers have a fascinating relationship: the trees provide rich\, fatty seeds\, and the birds “plant” the trees’ seeds —a single bird may hide up to 98\,000 seeds in a year. The food caches help the birds get through the winter\, and the leftovers grow into new trees. In fact\, whitebark pine trees sprout almost exclusively from nutcracker seed caches. This dependency has led to considerable concern for both species because whitebark pine ecosystems are rapidly disappearing in the western United States.\nLearn how research has advanced our understanding of the magnitude of the impact of the decline of whitebark pine on Clark’s Nutcrackers’ behavior and populations and how this data will aid in the design of biologically informed management interventions which will help maintain a healthy ecosystem by ensuring persistence of nutcrackers throughout their range. \nTaza Schaming\nTaza tells us that her career in ornithological and conservation research is not only her professional goal\, it is one of her greatest passions. A graduate of Cornell University\, Taza is currently working on finishing her PhD\, studying the topic she will be discussing at our meeting. \nThrough her research\, she is striving to create a better understanding of the intersection between conservation\, ornithology\, behavioral ecology\, and community ecology.
