SUMMARY:Spring Ephemeral Plant Walk
DESCRIPTION:After a long winter\, some of the most eager plants to bloom each year are our spring ephemerals. As their name suggests\, these plants are very short lived (sort of…) with sprouting\, blooming\, and seed dispersal all occurring within a few short weeks while sunlight bathes the forest floor as the trees begin to wake up. Middendorf Park in Vestal\, NY hosts a stunning variety of our native ephemerals including Trillium\, Trout Lilies\, and Ramp\, among some more uncommon species. Local naturalist Cam Winzinger will lead this trip. Check out their Science Communication Instagram @camsmagicshoolbus.\nThis trip is open to current club members. Registration is required.Sign up at https://forms.gle/xtwpBJZ7yw2tcJqS8. Cam will provide details on the trip and parking\, which is very limited at Middendorf Park.\n

SUMMARY:Field Trip - Porcupine Hike
DESCRIPTION:Winter can certainly be a dreary time\, so plan to get out for a field trip! Hemlock groves are still green and are full of animal life. We will hike into the University Nature Preserve to visit several hemlock groves. During the winter\, these areas provide shelter and a haven from the deeper snows for many mammals and birds. Highlights often include deer beds\, red squirrels\, great horned owls\, golden-crowned kinglets\, FISHER tracks\, and the main object of our labor: PORCUPINES. We will show you how to locate a porky through their sign and hopefully we will actually see one (be prepared to crane your neck\, but it is good warbler training). We will also discuss invasive species affecting hemlocks and the surge in the population of the predatory fisher. The hemlock groves are on a fairly steep hillside and if the snow is deep it can be a rigorous walk. It can also be slippery. However\, the lower hemlock grove is before the steeper portion and is fairly accessible. If the snow is deep think about snowshoes! Total walk is probably between 1 and 1.5 miles. Wear sturdy shoes with good traction and bring your binoculars. Total trip time between 1 to 2 hours. \nPark at the upper end of parking lot M and meet at the entrance to the Nature Preserve. Questions – Contact Victor Lamoureux at vlamoureux9@gmail.com or 607-770-6897. \nTHIS FIELD TRIP IS NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND YOU MUST BE A CURRENT NATURALISTS’ CLUB MEMBER TO ATTEND. SUMMARY:Porcupine Hike
DESCRIPTION:BU Nature Preserve Hemlock Grove\nSaturday\, February 25 -1:00pm \nWinter can be a dreary time\, so plan to get out for a field trip! Hemlock groves are still green and are full of animal life. We will hike into the Binghamton  University Nature Preserve to visit several hemlock groves.  During the winter\, these areas provide shelter and a haven from the deeper\nsnows for many mammals  and birds.  Highlights often include deer beds\, Red Squirrels\, Great Horned Owls\, Golden-Crowned Kinglets\, Fisher tracks\, and the main object of our labor:  PORCUPINES.  You will learn how to locate a porky through their sign and hopefully we will actually see one (be prepared to crane your neck\, but it is good warbler training). We will also discuss invasive species affecting hemlocks and the surge in the population of the predatory Fisher. \nThe hemlock groves are on a fairly steep hillside and if the snow is deep it can be a rigorous walk.  However\, the lower hemlock grove is before the steeper portion and is fairly accessible.  If the snow is deep think about snowshoes!  Total walk is probably between 1 and 1.5 miles.  Wear sturdy shoes\, dress warmly and bring your binoculars.  Total trip time between 1 to 2 hours.  Park at the upper end of parking lot M and meet at the entrance to the Nature Preserve.

SUMMARY:Field Trip - New Michigan State Forest - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:DUE TO WEATHER – THIS FIELD TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED!\nThis is a unique high elevation forest which features boreal forest-like habitat not seen outside the Adirondacks or summits of the Catskills. It is one of the few places that SWAINSON’S THRUSH (a boreal forest bird) actually nests in Central NY. This place you can get ALL brown thrushes in the east at once… WOOD\, HERMIT AND SWAINSON’S THRUSH plus VEERY. In addition\, the spruces are full of warblers\, Blackburnian and Magnolia are particularly abundant here along with quite a few Mourning and Canada warblers. \nConsider packing a lunch or at least a snack if you need to eat before noon. It is a 1 hour drive\, so we will probably bird from 8 to Noon and then head home. \nMeet at Oakdale Mall\, pole #6 at the back of Sears at 7:00am. All are welcome!\nPlease consider volunteering to drive as we will likely need more than one vehicle.
