Chenango Valley State Park Field Trip
Club President, Robert Grajewski will lead this field trip. We will take a chance and see how a February trip to Chenango Valley State Park works out. Please remember to dress for the weather and wear good boots as some of the trails have wet areas. Meet at Oakdale Mall, pole #6 at the back of Sears at 8:00am. Volunteer drivers may be necessary. BU Nature Preserve Hemlock Grove Saturday, February 25 -1:00pm Winter can be a dreary time, so plan to get out for a field trip! Hemlock groves are still green and are full of animal life. We will hike into the Binghamton University Nature Preserve to visit several hemlock groves. During the winter, these areas provide shelter and a haven from the deeper snows for many mammals and birds. We will take a trip to the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society Sanctuary located on Franklin Mountain near Oneonta, NY. Please dress warmly as it can be quite cold and windy. There are still a lot of birds to be seen in Broome County in the winter. We will investigate the backroads of Northern Broome County looking for any Winter Migrants or Early Spring arrivals. If time allows, we may stop at Dorchester Park. We’ll visit local hotspots to look for Northern Shrike, Rough-legged Hawks, Snow Buntings, Horned Larks, and Tree Sparrows. Migration will be just beginning so let’s see what we can find. We will investigate the backroads of Northern Broome County looking for any late winter migrants or early spring arrivals. Come join us for a fun and informative morning at Lackawanna State Park for Warbler Banding. This is a beautiful park located in Northeastern, PA, just 10 minutes from Scranton. Meet to car pool at 6:30am at Lowe’s Parking Lot on Upper Front Street.

After checking the edge of the lake, Colleen Wolpert will lead a moderate hike to a lesser known part of the park where a pond hosts a variety of dragonflies and damselflies to be photographed for identification later. Meet at Greenwood Park at 11am. Please protect yourself from sun and ticks and have water with you for this walk.
Find out more »Field Trip – Butterfly Walk at Long Pond Grasslands
We will alternate driving and walking along the dead-end level dirt road looking for butterflies. There will be a temptation to walk in tall grass, so long pants tucked into socks is recommended. Binoculars and cameras are also recommended for both butterflies and birds. Be prepared to be asked about eye color of fritillaries in this area.
