We will take a trip to the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society Sanctuary located on Franklin Mountain near Oneonta, NY. Please dress warmly as it can be quite cold and windy. Kevin Mathers will talk about two non-native forest insect pests, the emerald ash borer and hemlock woolly adelgid. Both have recently infested the trees in the Southern Tier of NY and Northern Tier of PA. Ash and hemlock trees are common in our forests and their demise will likely lead to significant ecological impacts. In lieu of our normal Wednesday December meeting, our meeting will be moved to THURSDAY evening, DECEMBER 14. This is for an EXCLUSIVE, "first-look" at the new NatureTrek exhibit at the Roberson Museum and Science Center. The exhibit features realistic dioramas of local habitats and utilizes the taxidermy of Lee Loomis throughout. Rick Marsi, who consulted on the exhibit, will be on hand to give some remarks. Learn about the habitat needs of a suite of forest birds, and how we can manage forests to provide quality habitat. Management recommendations to improve habitat on a variety of property sizes, including small woodlots, will be discussed. Guest speaker Suzanne Treyger is the Forest Program Manager for Audubon NY. Suzanne promotes sustainable forestry practices on private and public land by providing outreach and technical assistance to landowners and land managers. There are still a lot of birds to be seen in Broome County in the winter. We will investigate the backroads of Northern Broome County looking for any Winter Migrants or Early Spring arrivals. If time allows, we may stop at Dorchester Park. We’ll visit local hotspots to look for Northern Shrike, Rough-legged Hawks, Snow Buntings, Horned Larks, and Tree Sparrows.
