Membership Meeting – New York Forests
New York Forests – An Endangered Species? by Jerry Michael The second-growth forests covering nearly two thirds of our state are facing many threats. Expected impacts from the Emerald Ash Borer and Hemlock Woolley Adelgid are well-understood and relatively near-term. The impacts from climate change are less well-understood, but long term. Club President, Robert Grajewski will lead this field trip. We will take a chance and see how a February trip to Chenango Valley State Park works out. The Mariana Crow is a small, unique forest crow endemic to the islands of Guam and Rota in the Mariana Islands. This species has experienced a dramatic decline in the past 30-40 years. Andria Kroner will discuss their ecology, the factors that are contributing to their decline, and what is currently being done to reverse it. BU Nature Preserve Hemlock Grove Saturday, February 25 -1:00pm Winter can be a dreary time, so plan to get out for a field trip! Hemlock groves are still green and are full of animal life. Our guest speaker will be Justin Mann. Migratory songbirds can collect information about their environment or they can utilize social cues from other individuals to assess the quality of a habitat. To examine how migratory songbirds are influenced by social information, black-and-white warbler songs were broadcast at study sites where that species had not been observed during baseline bird surveys.
