Harvest Dinner

October 20, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for our annual Harvest Dinner. Our program will be presented by Bill Evans whose topic will be: THE EARLY EFFORTS TO MINIMIZE BIRD MORTALITY AT TALL COMMUNICATIONS TOWERS – STORIES FROM BROOME COUNTY.

Beginning in the 1950s, large bird kills were regularly documented at tall TV towers across North America. The United State Fish & Wildlife Service estimated that millions of songbirds were being killed annually. In 1997, with the threat on the horizon of 1000 new tall TV towers to be built for digital television infrastructure, an effort arose to mitigate the kills. Bill Evans will present his recollections of those earlier years, including stories involving Broome County.

Bill Evans is director of Old Bird Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on nocturnal bird migration research & education. For the past 30 years Bill has studied the vocalizations birds give while in nocturnal migration. His expertise on nocturnal bird migration led him into active involvement with efforts to mitigate avian fatalities at communications towers, wind turbines, and oil & gas drilling rigs. His current research is directed toward developing a new index for songbird populations and understanding the impacts of artificial light on night-migrating birds. Bill’s research has been featured on PBS, BBC, NPR and in Science, The New York Times and numerous science-news periodicals. Bill lives with his wife and two children in the Town of Danby, NY.
